Letter to Wall's

So you've probably noticed in the photos of the Ref, that he appears to be sponsored by the food company Wall's, and sports the web address www.bangers.co.uk across his back. Why you may ask? Well the Ref was in fact made to promote the sausage and bacon company at the time of the Euro 2000 football tournament. More on the origins of our Ref will be revealed soon...

Anyway, now that we have the new site up and running, we thought that it was time to contact Wall's to see what they thought of our adventures with their sausages-approved inflatable, so we wrote to them...

Hello,

Back in the year 2000 you may remember that you produced a promotional inflatable football referee, sporting a large Wall’s logo on his chest, and the web address
www.bangers.co.uk on the back. The referee was available to the public by collecting a number of tokens from your packs of bacon, which were sent to yourselves with a cheque to cover the cost of postage. The promotion was obviously in support of the Euro 2000 football campaign, another tournament remembered mostly for its lacklustre performance by the England team. But I digress.

At the time I was at university in Reading. Bacon was a fairly staple part of mine and my housemate’s diets, and Walls thick streaky bacon was our butty filling of choice. It wasn’t long before we had collected enough tokens from the packets to get ourselves our own inflatable referee. So we sent the tokens off, and sure enough a few weeks later our friendly postman woke us at around midday to deliver ‘The Ref’. We inflated him immediately, and from then on, he became a part of our lives as university students.

Following our graduation, myself and a housemate had big plans to travel the world. Around a year later, having scrimped and saved, we packed our bags and set off on a 4 month trip, taking in the USA, Australia and Thailand. First stop was Boston, Massachusetts, and imagine my surprise when, after a few days there, my travelling buddy produced none other than the Ref from his back pack!

It became our goal to take a photo of the Ref at every major location we visited, and upon our return, we would publish these photos on the internet. Well… the web site has been around for sometime now but we have just revamped it and added a lot more photos. You see, it has become tradition within our circle of friends (and our parents), that you can’t travel anywhere anymore without taking the Ref.

Please have a look at our site:
www.wherestheref.com.

As you can see, we have done rather a lot for your global brand, as the Ref has been spreading the word of your sausages far and wide – from the Alps in France, to Sydney, Australia, via a whole load of places in between. We would very much like to continue to travel with the Ref, and to carry on updating the web site with photos from new and interesting locations. However, as you can imagine, this costs a lot of money. So we wondered if you would be interested in sponsoring us to continue our travels, so that we can continue to educate the world in the wonders of Wall’s sausages. I am sure that you can see the benefits of such a venture, and if you are interested, we would be very keen to talk to you.

If not, how about a few packets of sausages instead?

Kind regards,

Richard

  2. I did exactly the same with my referee, took him all over the World but he got busty during a violent reaction to England's pathetic performance at the South Africa World cup. We called hi Maurice and he was a regular at family holidays and parties. Where can I get one ?
